Born in San Francisco, California he studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art and then went to London. He became a professional boxer to finance his art training in Paris with James Whistler. He settled in London and was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. From 1905 to 1912, he exhibited at The Royal Academy. In 1908, he made an extended trip through California and Western Canada for "Illustrated London News." In 1928, he painted Arizona landscapes and in 1934, murals in San Francisco at Coit Tower for the WPA. His studio and cottage had a panoramic view of the bay.
