Sam Colburn and his family moved to Los Angeles from Colorado in 1918 when he was just a boy. Sam liked to tell people, ``I'm one of the few people you'll ever meet who actually saw Buffalo Bill. He was laid out in state there in Denver, in his coffin, and I must say he looked great.''
Sam loved watercolors, and he loved golf. He was a resident and member of the local art scene since the 1930's. His paintings have been compared favorably to the works of the great American artist John Marin.
Sam authored Tales from the Taxi, a collection of sketches and true stories from the golden days of that great Carmel institution (still going strong), Joe's Taxi, for which Sam drove a cab for many years. Sam was also famous for his hats. Chris Casey, a writer for the newspaper Coasting, once described Sam as ``artist, teacher, character, taxi driver, and famous hat rack.'' Eldon Dedini described Sam as ``the hat that drives.''
